It’s surreal. I have a son in the military. He’s a US Coast Guardsman. You have to understand that my father was active duty in the Army most of my childhood. I never even had a clue what the Coast Guard was about or what the heck they do. So when my son, Isaiah, told us he wanted to join the Coast Guard, I started seeing Coastie stuff everywhere.
Let me tell you a little bit about Isaiah. He is our oldest of 4 kids. He is our only son. He was reading at 4 years old and has been blowing me away ever since with his ability to retain knowledge about anything and everything. He did not like school. He laughs easily. One time in middle school, about 6 weeks into the year, we got a note from his Foods For Today teacher saying, “Carl needs a measuring cup brought in by Monday or he gets a failing grade”. So naturally, my husband and I were confused and my husband wrote her back saying that we would of course make sure our son had a measuring cup by Monday and that just to be sure she had the correct email, we were Isaiah’s parents. To which she replied, “Yes, Isaiah Wright, he told us he goes by Carl”. So for an entire 6 weeks, he let her believe his name was Carl. Maybe he should have gotten in trouble for that but let me just say that Freddy (my husband) and I CRACKED UP! Seriously, Isaiah is so quick to say the craziest things and he’s so funny.
I could not be more proud of Isaiah’s choice to serve our great nation. I also could not be more proud of Isaiah’s choice in who he will grow old with. Amanda. Amanda came into my life almost 6 years ago when she emailed me about photographing her newborn son who was finally home from the hospital after being in the NICU for 110 days. I have been photographing her son ever since. We had no idea she would go through an unwanted divorce and end up falling in love with our son. Isaiah and Amanda started dating 2 years ago and for the last year have talked about getting married. Then he left for Basic Training and in his first letter home to me and Freddy, he asked Freddy if he would perform a small wedding ceremony for them. He wanted to surprise her. Amanda is one of the best friends that I have so keeping his plans from her was SO HARD! He told us which ring to get, where he wanted to ask her and we just stood back and watched. I feel extra blessed to have been able to capture the proposal. They planned and executed their wedding in 7 days before he had to leave for his A school in California. So it’s official. I have a married son….a beautiful daughter in law and a grandson. The shots of Harrison hugging Isaiah after the ceremony make me cry every time I see them. I am so thankful for this little boy who is loved by so many people. I am proud of how Isaiah loves Amanda and Harrison. God has been better to me than I deserve!
My Dad is a Retired US Army Colonel and it was an honor for me to have him there for this special time.
Is she gorgeous in the dress or what?!?
